Robert Watson Hughes, AO, MBE (27 March 1912 – 1 August 2007) was a Scottish-born Australian composer. His music has been characterised as muscular, assertive, pugnacious, with a dark, troubled, even driven quality; but it was also deeply sensitive, lyrical and tender. His capacity to view a complex landscape of diverse musical activity with clarity and with wisdom has been noted. Hughes wrote orchestral works (his 1951 Symphony has been described as the finest symphony composed by an Australian), music for ballet and film, some chamber works and an opera that has never been performed.

The Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major, Op. 38, also known as the Spring Symphony, is the first symphonic work composed by Robert Schumann. Although he had made some "symphonic attempts" in the autumn of 1840 soon after he married Clara Wieck, he did not compose his first symphony until early 1841. Until then, Schumann was largely known for his works for the piano and for voice

Peter tahoudin - symphony no. robert hughes - symphony no. sydney symphony orchestra. South Australia SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. 6 from "Australian festival of music" series, the first series dedicated to recording of australian musicians work. 2 by Gustav Mahler, known as the Resurrection Symphony, was written between 1888 and 1894, and first performed in 1895. This symphony was one of Mahler's most popular and successful works during his lifetime. It was his first major work that established his lifelong view of the beauty of afterlife and resurrection. In this large work, the composer further developed the creativity of "sound of the distance" and creating a "world of its own", aspects already seen in his First Symphony

Only 1 left in stock (more on the way). The first release in Valery Gergiev s Rachmaninov symphony cycle features a magnificent performance of the Symphony N., recorded in September 2008 at the Barbican. This vast work was composed when Rachmaninov was at the pinnacle of his careers as composer, pianist and conductor. Filled with emotion and brimming with beautiful melodies, it is a masterpiece and the epitome of the Romantic symphony. The recording features the complete version of the symphony and will be followed in future years by the first and third symphonies as well as the Symphonic Dances.
