Lonnie McIntosh (July 18, 1941 – April 21, 2016), known by his stage name Lonnie Mack, was an influential American pioneer of blues-rock music and rock guitar soloing. Mack emerged in 1963, with his proto-blues-rock debut LP, The Wham of that Memphis Man. The album's vocals established Mack's renown as a blue-eyed soul singer. However, he gained wider recognition for the album's electric guitar instrumentals, passages, and interludes.

This is the album that proves it. Instrumental versions of R&B hits ("Memphis," "Susie Q," "The Bounce") rebound against heartfelt soul numbers ("Farther Down the Road," "Why?") right next to dazzling fretboard blues romps both slow and fast ("Wham!," "Down and Out"). Mack sings his rear end off, the band - with saxes and Hammond organ and pumping soul bass - is right in there and Mack's vibrato-drenched guitar stings, wounds, and amazes.

Memphis Wham! is the long-awaited follow-up to LONNIE ON THE MOVE (CDCH 352). That was the rest of, so prepare yourself for the best of. The line-up features Mack's classic Fraternity album The Wham Of The Memphis Man, plus 13 extra tracks consisting of rare singles and eight previously unreleased sides, all in terrific sound.

On this great album, Lonnie Mack shows off awesome guitar skills, as well as a soulful, gospel-tinged voice that was ahead of its time. Every cut on this record is choice, but in particular, his famous instrumental "Wham," "Where There's A Will, There's A Way," "I'll Keep You Happy," "Why," and his cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis" are standouts. This is a must for blues lovers, guitar music lovers, and classis 60's soul/R&B lovers. Stevie Ray Vaughan knew who Lonnie is- there is a fine vid of them doing "Wham" (changed to "Double Whammy") live. Lonnie is a great white blues shouter and gospel singer, as well as being a true originator as a guitar player. In addition to his warbling guitar tone (Magnatone's true pitch-shifting vibrato, not "tremolo"), if you've ever heard a vibrato bar on a guitar called a "whammy bar", this guy and his recording of "Wham" is where that came from.

Lonnie Mack bent, stroked, and modified the sound of six strings in ways that baffled his contemporaries and served as a guide to future players Chuck Seitz, the album's recording engineer, said it was recorded in eight hours, entirely without overdubbing.
