Eric Hilliard Nelson (May 8, 1940 – December 31, 1985) was an American rock and roll star, musician, and singer-songwriter. From age eight he starred alongside his family in the radio and television series The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. In 1957 he began a long and successful career as a popular recording artist.
This is the heaviest rock album the P-Funk ever created, but it also made room for the acoustic-guitar funk of Can You Get to That. The sound he and Rick Rubin found on "I Can't Live Without My Radio" and "Rock the Bells" was harder and leaner than hip-hop had ever been. Melody meets melodrama on the title track and on "A Promise," where McCulloch sing-sobs a story of love gone wrong.
Rick Sings Nelson continues in the same progressive – country – rock styles Rick used on his last album, Rick Nelson In Concert, with an added dash of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young influence and a definite Beatlish aura. Also, as the title indicates, Rick has composed all the songs on the album himself. How is Rick Nelson as a song writer? Well, so-so.

Rick Nelson had been maturing as an artist and developing a country-influenced sound for many years when he arrived at a crossroads on 15 October 1971. Nelson and his Stone Canyon Band had just released the Rudy The Fifth album, which narrowly missed the top 200 chart in the US but was widely acclaimed. As a measure of how far he’d come from the days of ‘Poor Little Fool,’ ‘Hello Mary Lou’ and countless other hits of his youth, it included covers of the Rolling Stones‘ ‘Honky Tonk Women’ and Bob Dylan‘s ‘Just Like A Woman’ and ‘Love Minus Zero/No Limit. Boos rang out from the rock ‘n’ roll crowd, although there is a school of thought that they weren’t directed at Rick, but at the police for refusing to let fans on stage. Either way, the artist would have the last laugh.
