In 1968 Wills was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. A year later, he suffered a debilitating stroke. There were reunions and recording sessions with many of the old Texas Playboys in 1971 and 1973. Wills’ final stroke came in his sleep following the first day of recording for a December 1973 session that resulted in the double album For the Last Time. Confined to a wheelchair, he would have reprised his role as bandleader that day with a group of musicians that included former Texas Playboys. He never regained consciousness and died eighteen months later

Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1968, and into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame (as "Early Influence") in 1999. After the initial breakup in 1965, the band continued performing briefly "The Texas Playboys", led by Leon Rausch. The would reunite again as The Original Texas Playboys Under The Direction Of Leon McAuliffe from 1973-1986, until the death of pianist Al Stricklin. At that point, Leon Rausch and Tommy Allsup purchased the rights to use the name "Bob Wills' Texas Playboys" from Betty Wills and continued touring.

Wills formed several bands and played radio stations around the South and West until he formed the Texas Playboys in 1934 with Wills on fiddle, Tommy Duncan on piano and vocals, rhythm guitarist June Whalin, tenor banjoist Johnnie Lee Wills, and Kermit Whalin, who played steel guitar and bass. Bob Wills (James Robert Wills, March 6, 1905 – May 13, 1975) was an American Western swing musician, songwriter, and big band leader.
