Misja Mengelberg (he later changed the spelling of his first name) was born into a musical family on June 5, 1935, in Kiev, in what is now Ukraine. His father, Karel, was a conductor; his mother, the former Rahel Draber, was a harpist; a great-uncle was a conductor who had worked with Arturo Toscanini. He began taking piano lessons shortly after the family moved to the Netherlands in the late 1930s. In 1963 Mr. Mengelberg formed a quartet, whose members included Mr. Bennink. The next year he, Mr. Bennink and the bassist Jacques Schols accompanied Dolphy at the concert in the Dutch city of Hilversum that would be released as Last Date. In 1966 his quartet performed at the Newport Jazz Festival. Bennink and the saxophonist Willem Breuker formed the Instant Composers Pool.

Mengelberg's first album as a leader, The Misja Mengelberg Quartet as Heard at the Newport Jazz Festival 1966, was recorded during his first trip to the . Around that time and back home, Mengelberg won the Wessel Ilcken Prize. He also judged a local jazz competition in which he heard the young saxophonist Willem Breuker for the first time. Mengelberg and Bennink had a trio with the frequently visiting British saxophonist Evan Parker beginning in 1969, followed by a quartet with reedsman John Tchicai and guitarist Derek Bailey, which toured briefly and recorded two albums between 1970 and 1971. Months before this, the core duo of Parker and Bailey were joined by saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, trombonist Paul Rutherford, and saxophonist Peter Bennink (Han's brother) for what became the septet album Groupcomposing.

He was born Misja Mengelberg to a musical family in Kiev, in what was then the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Mengelberg quickly developed into a jazz pianist capable of accompanying the world’s best, working as a sideman in clubs and studios, recording Last Date with Dolphy in 1964 and forming a quartet featuring the brilliant drummer Han Bennink (an encounter that became a lifetime collaboration) that performed at the 1966 Newport jazz festival. Mengelberg’s final public performance was at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam in June 2014 – the last of three Oyster Sessions, in which the club furnished white wine and one of the old contrarian’s favourite seafood treats while he played and chatted with old and new friends from the ICP.

Not your typical Mengelberg Free Jazz outing...much more straight ahead simple "Boppish"...Discogs has "Style" as "Post Bop and Free Jazz Improvisation" Upon my listenings I discovered nothing "Free". Just your straight ahead 4/4 tap footing "noodling" ....and with that said I have to "pass"..........
