Most of the themes (which are inspired in an abstract way by Swell 's time spent in the Sahara desert and Gebhard 's desert experiences in the American West) are brief although sometimes they return between improvised sections. The interplay on some of the more spirited pieces is a bit like a Mingus group, or perhaps Archie Shepp 's band with Roswell Rudd

Gebhard Ullmann (born in Bad Godesberg, Germany, November 2, 1957) is a composer and improvisor unique in the jazz world today. Playing a multitude of reeds and flutes, and maintaining an international presence with both European and American groups, Ullmann has created a body of work that is much more than a chronological series of recordings documenting his musical thinking. Each individual album is connected to the others, not only by the presence of Ullmann, but also by how the compositions mutate. Ullmann moves forward by looking backward; in essence circling and hence rolling, rather than moving straight forward. Steve Swell, who is the co-leader with Ullmann of the quartet on Desert Songs & Other Landscapes adds his trombone energy to the mix, while bassist John Hebert and drummer Gerald Cleaver provide intense rhythmic support.

Desert Songs & Other Landscapes features a working group co-led by tenor-saxophonist Gebhard Ullmann and trombonist Steve Swell. This is a fiery set full of explorative colorful solos and dynamic group interplay. Much of the time Ullmann and Swell improvise together, being pushed by bassist Hillard Greene and veteran drummer Barry Altschul. Most of the themes (which are inspired in an abstract way by Swell's time spent in the Sahara desert and Gebhard's desert experiences in the American West) are brief although sometimes they return between improvised sections.

Parched and rugged terrain provided inspiration for the last album by the Gebhard Ullmann-Steve Swell Quartet, "Desert Songs and Other Landscapes" (CIMP). Not long before the album was recorded, the trombonist Steve Swell spent a few nights camping out in the Sahara. The German saxophonist and clarinetist Gebhard Ullmann, above, had traveled through the American Southwest
