Before his 1963 performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, Dizzy Gillespie had already been actively involved in the influential project. As one of the first performers approached for the original 1957 lineup, Dizzy became a staple in the years to come. This set consists of eight uptempo, Latin and blues influenced jam sessions.

Dizzy for President" is not one of those inessential, disposable Gillespie recordings. It's a 1963 Newport concert date during which both Dizzy and his frontline partner, James Moody, are in prime form, the one player spurring the other to ever greater heights. The mystery is why this outstanding recording by a jazz "legend" at (or very close to) his peak was withheld for several decades while much inferior recorded Gillespie found its way into the marketplace. Gillespie was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser, building on the virtuoso style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic and rhythmic complexity previously unheard in jazz. His combination of musicianship, showmanship, and wit made him a leading popularizer of the new music called bebop.
