In the late 1940s, the combined influences of jazz and European and Cuban music resonated on both sides of the Congo River. Brazzaville and Leopoldville, now Kinshasa, vibrated with a newfound electric modernity

But it achieves its steady-state bliss by showcasing second-level artists rarely heard in the States: Franco's brother Bavon Marie Marie, dead in an automobile accident at 26; outspoken Congo-Brazzaville progressive Franklin Boukaka, executed after a leftwing coup at 31; Franco's adaptable guitarist mentor Dewayon; sax man as big man Verckys; silken guitarist Docteur Nico; and many others who.

Congo Square is the thirteenth studio album by American singer and songwriter Teena Marie. Released in the United States on June 9, 2009, it would be her only album for the revived Stax label and the final album released before her death in late December 2010. The album features collaborations with Teena Marie's daughter Alia Rose-who records under the name of Rose LeBeau-and rapper MC Lyte, as well as Faith Evans, George Duke and Shirley Murdock.

Hmm, it looks like we don’t know much about this album. Do you know any background info about this album?

From 1976 we have this collection of Congolese songs called African Retro vo. ‘Pont sur le Zaïre’. On side one, 6 songs by the great Orchestre OK Jazz. Track was written by Coimy, track by Dele, the other 4 tracks by Franco. Strangely, this compilation was originally released in 1960s in the UK, on the Parlophone label, entitled ‘Bridge Over The Congo’, which presumably explains the odd title of this version. It’s one of the very rarest UK African LPs. I got a cassette dub of it many years ago, missing the last track, so I am absolutely delighted to get this rip with its superior sound and full complement of tracks.
