Sonny Okosuns added the final s to his surname in adulthood. He was referred to by both names. A self-taught guitar player, in 1964, at the age of 17, Sonny formed the Postmen, a covers band also known as the "Local Beatles". By the late Eighties, Okosun's star was fading, but he reinvented himself as "Evangelist Sonny Okosuns" and with the 1994 comeback album "Songs of Praise", which sold nearly a million copies, rode a wave of Christian evangelism in Nigeria to become that country's foremost gospel musician. In 1998, he founded the House of Prayer Ministry, converting part of his expansive building to a church.
Sonny Okosun (was born on 1 January 1947 – 24 May 2008 in Washington DC). He was a musician from Nigeria and was best known as the leader of the Ozzidi band. He named his band Ozzidi after a renowned Ijaw river god, but to Okosun the meaning was "there is a message". His surname is sometimes spelled Okosuns and his first name Sunny. He was one of the leading Nigerian musicians from the late 1970s to mid-1980s.
Sonny Okosuns, a Nigerian singer and musician who achieved international stature by aiming his music - a catchy, rock-inflected cocktail of funk, reggae, Afrobeat and more - at human-rights abuses, died on May 24 in Washington. He was 61. Nigerian government officials confirmed his death. Reports in Nigerian newspapers said the cause was colon cancer. Mr. Okosuns added the final s to his surname in adulthood, Africa News reported. He was referred to by both names
Nigerian composer, singer and evangelist. The Nigerian singer, guitarist and composer Sonny Okosuns, who achieved global success in the 1970s and 80s with the highlife-reggae hit Fire in Soweto, has died in Washington DC of colon cancer at the age of 61. He found fame across Africa with his socio-political "liberation" lyrics and crossover style of internationalised pop highlife. He released almost 40 albums and his appeal to mainstream audiences was helped by the high production values he brought to his recordings. He re-recorded much of his 1976 album Ozzidi for Sale (1976) at EMI studios in Abbey Road, London, after observing recording sessions by the Ghanaian highlife pop band Osibisa. In 1981 he said: "Nigerian listeners are very sophisticated and they don't want any trash.
