When I first heard "Just Once" from Quincy Jones' already beyond magnificent "The Dude" album, it completely stopped me in my tracks. And immediately played it again. Interpret: James Ingram. Title: It's real (1989).
James Ingram, whose voice - technically precise, crisp and reserved, yet full of audacious feeling - made him one of the defining singers of R&B in the 1980s, has died. He was 66. Actress and choreographer Debbie Allen, a frequent collaborator with Ingram on musical theatre projects, announced his death on Twitter on Tuesday, calling him her dearest friend and creative partner. She did not say where or when he died or specify the cause. I Don’t Have the Heart, a song from his third album, It’s Real, reached No. 1 in 1990, but Ingram released music less frequently in the following decades. In 2008 he released a gospel album, Stand (in the Light), and he spoke frequently about his faith on The 700 Club, on the Christian Broadcasting Network. Ingram’s survivors include his wife, Debra, whom he married in 1975.
