This article presents the discography of the jazz saxophonist and band leader John Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967). Coltrane participated in his first recording sessions while enlisted in the Navy from August 6, 1945, to August 11, 1946. He performed eight numbers in a pickup band that included trumpeter Dexter Culbertson. These were private recordings not made for official release.

It’s 1958 and John Coltrane is looking to rebuild his career. The reputation of the Philadelphia-raised musician, then 32, had seemed in serious jeopardy a year earlier, after his heroin addiction got him fired from Miles Davis’ group. As a rising star of the tenor saxophone – the man who had lit up a clutch of Davis albums recorded for both Prestige and Columbia during 1955-56 – the high-flying Coltrane seemed an indispensable component of the trumpeter’s band, but the shock of his sacking, in March 1957, brought him down to earth with a heavy jolt.

Best Jazz Albums of 1956 - Gerry Mulligan, John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Vol. 8. Gerry Mulligan, Donald Byrd, Walter Bolden, Max McElroy, John Coltrane, Allen Eager. John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey & His Jazz Messengers, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey & His Jazz Messengers, John Coltrane. 2018 Remastered 2018. Both Directions At Once: The Lost Album.

All of his albums are explorations and multi-layered journeys that take the listener to places they never expected to go. Through his long discography with labels like Impulse, Blue Note, Atlantic, and others, Coltrane experimented with many sounds, instruments, and concepts. From straight ahead jazz, to free form and experimental, Coltrane has done it all and is considered to be the reigning champ of the jazz saxophone. There are so many Coltrane albums (and others he has appeared on) to listen to and all of them are fantastic in their own right.

Coltrane also did a bunch of collaborations with other artists as co-leader. I've included all of these, however I've left out his work with Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis, as he was definitely a subordinate member of those bands rather than a collaborator or leader. There are a huge number of live recordings of Coltrane out there, most of which were never released on his main labels. Those might be a future project, but I have included in this series all the live albums that were issued on the labels he recorded studio albums with. These albums are essential parts.

John Coltrane is widely considered one of the best jazz musicians of all time and this list of the best John Coltrane albums includes all his best work, as ranked by fans and jazz lovers. This list does not include John Coltrane singles, EPs, or compilations, so everything you see here should only be studio albums. Blue Train is the second studio album by John Coltrane, released in 1957 on Blue Note Records, catalogue BLP 1577. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, it is Coltrane's. 5. 107 18. Crescent 1964.
