Concluding part of Cannonball Adderley Sextet's live set for BBC2's 625 show, recorded in May 1964. Includes such numbers as 'The Weaver', 'Sweet Georgia Bright' and 'Unit Seven'. This is a great recording, as are most of the Jazz 625 recordings. They should all be released on DVD. The shows were reshown on TV in the 1980's and this is one of the very best. It features Oscar with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums performing great versions of "Hallelujah Time", "Con Alma", "Waltz for Debby", Cubano Chant and finally a truly stunning version "Yours is my Heart Alone".
Jazz 625 was devised as part of a package of programmes chosen to launch the BBC’s second channel in 1964. The enigmatic title was chosen to reflect the upgrade from the 405-line VHF signal to the 625 lines of UHF offered by the new channel - the high-definition TV of the time. Jazz was among the subjects thought to be culturally appropriate for such a venture, and Jazz 625 – like the parallel strands of Theatre 625 and Cinema 625 - was designed to express a higher purpose.
Jazz Icons: Cannonball Adderley boasts two beautifully filmed concerts from one of the most celebrated sextets in jazz history, captured at the top of their game. Cannonball Adderley (alto sax), Nat Adderley (cornet) and the masterful Yusef Lateef (tenor sax, flute, oboe), provide a massive three-horn frontline attack, while the stellar rhythm section featuring a pre-Weather Report Joe Zawinul (piano), Sam Jones (bass) and Louis Hayes (drums) fuel the songs with a deep infectious swing .
