Unhalfbricking is the third album by the British folk rock band Fairport Convention and their second album released in 1969. It is seen as a transitional album in their history and marked a further musical move away from American influences towards more traditional English folk songs that had begun on their previous album, What We Did on Our Holidays and reached its peak on the follow-up, Liege & Lief, released later the same year.

What We Did on Our Holidays (released as Fairport Convention in the United States) is the 1969 second album by the band Fairport Convention. It was their first album to feature singer-songwriter Sandy Denny, whose "haunting, ethereal vocals gave Fairport a big boost", according to Richie Unterberger.

For in no way did the aforementioned album spring out of nowhere. These three CDs show the full story of Fairport's growth from North London flower children to fully paid-up tweed and corduroy-wearing traditionalists. And (here comes the controversial bit) Leige And Lief was in no way their best work. By Unhalfbricking Fairport had already redrawn the arbitrary lines that divided folk and rock in the same way that their heroes, The Band, had done in the States. Thompson, by now, was a fully-fledged master of his craft (at the age of 20!): ''Genesis Hall'' being the first of his really melancholy masterpieces.

1969 was a roller-coaster year for Fairport Convention. In January of that year they released their second album What We Did On Our Holidays, the first with singer Sandy Denny. In May they hit rock bottom with a tragedy that killed two people including one of its members. Miraculously they recovered and released the album that defines the British folk rock revival of that period, the iconic Liege and Lief. By December Sandy Denny and bass player Ashley Hutchings left the band to form Fotheringay and Steeleye Span and the classic Fairport Convention lineup was no more

The ultimate Bob Dylan recycling album depicting Fairport Convention on an interim course of covering predominantly American music with a British kind of eccentricity. In spite of some inessential moments this album still keeps a sufficient level of meaning, but the folk rock longtrack surely can't hold a candle to the group's later efforts in that genre. Unhalfbricking is sad, it's funny, it's colorful, it's British and American at the same time, it's partly innovative, it's authentic and it's a tough listen

Their first, self-titled album, recorded late in 1967 and released the following June, appeared while the group were advancing their reputation on the live circuit. When we started in ’67, Hutchings told this writer in Prog magazine, we were kind of copying the Americans. It’s a wonder that we had the success we did. But John Peel got behind us, and a lot of other people, and then by the second album - third album, certainly - we were starting to get folkier. It would be another few months before Fairport became a UK chart presence with the follow-up, Unhalfbricking, but What We Did On Our Holidays was a vital early chapter of a story that now extends over half a century.
