It was issued by RCA Records after Reed's first contract with them ended in 1976. Like many of Reed's songs, "Walk on the Wild Side" is based on a plagal cadence, alternating from C to F. The F is played as a sixth chord . Stephan Jenkins, lead singer of American alternative rock band Third Eye Blind has stated that the band's hit song "Semi-Charmed Life" was meant as a response to "Walk on the Wild Side", but from a San Francisco perspective. British singer Jamie J. Morgan released a cover version in 1990, which reached the UK Top 30.
