Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73, was composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1877, during a visit to Pörtschach am Wörthersee, a town in the Austrian province of Carinthia. Its composition was brief in comparison with the 21 years it took Brahms to complete his First Symphony. The symphony is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, and strings.
Redlands Symphony proudly presents BRAHMS's Symphony No. 73. Discover little-known secrets and interesting discorse on its history, creation, and performance. First performance: December 30, 1877, Vienna Philharmonic. Hans Richter, conductor. In outward appearance, the career of Johannes Brahms seemed enviable. The Symphony No. 2 in D major is one of the most cheerful of Brahms’ mature works, so much so that it is often called his Pastoral, in obvious reference to Beethoven’s symphony with the same name. Its bucolic nature may be due to the fact that it was composed during Brahms’ summer holiday in 1877 while living on the shores of a beautiful Austrian lake. The first performance, on December 30, 1877, was entrusted to the respected Hans Richter and the Vienna Philharmonic.
73 New York Philharmonic & Zubin Mehta. Info for Brahms: Symphony No. I became a conductor, Zubin Mehta revealed in his autobiography, because deep down I wanted to conduct Brahms’s four symphonies and Richard Strauss’s tone poems. In 1958 he won the Liverpool International Conducting Competition as well as a prize at Tanglewood, and within three years he had already conducted the Philharmonic orchestras of Vienna, Berlin and Israel. In 1978 Mehta succeeded Pierre Boulez as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, commencing a tenure that lasted 13 years, still the longest in the history of America’s oldest orchestra.
Brahms composed his Second Symphony during the summer of 1877 at the village of Pörtschach on the Worthersee, a picturesque Austrian lakeside retreat. The other notable work to emerge from this sabbatical was the dark, tortured motet, Why Is the Light Given to the Wretched? Surprisingly, a bit of this darkness lurks beneath the surface of the Symphony as well, something that Brahms explained to an admirer who asked the composer about the rumbling timpani and the gloomy, lugubrious tones of the trombones in the first movement, especially during its otherwise tranquil close.
Gewandhausorchester Leipzig Conductor: Kurt Masur. That evening, the Gewandhausorchester played under his baton Brahms’ Second Symphony at the St. Nicolas Church. The following regular "Monday Demonstrations", which came to be described as the Peaceful Revolution, became a major milestone on the way to open the Berlin Wall one month later on November the 9th in 1989 and paving the foundations for the reunification of the two German states. Exactly 20 years later, the Gewandhausorchester and Kurt Masur commemorate the beginning of the German reunification by presenting the same symphony at the same location. 7 months ago.
