The Johnstons were an Irish close-harmony folk band, founded in Slane, County Meath, Ireland, consisting of Adrienne, Lucy and Michael Johnston. The Johnstons began performing in the early 1960s in Slane. They signed to Pye Records in 1965 and recorded Ewan MacColl's "The Travelling People", a major hit for them. They added Mick Moloney, then becoming a major figure in the Irish music scene, and Paul Brady, while Michael Johnston departed.

The Johnstons were a family folk group who were immensely popular in Ireland in the late 1960s. They recorded both traditional and contemporary folk material, some of the latter straying into folk-rock and pop-folk areas on occasion. The original lineup consisted of sisters Adrienne and Lucy Johnston singing close-harmony, backed by their brother Michael on acoustic 12-string guitar. This trio signed to Pye Records in 1965 and scored their only Irish hit with their first single, a cover of Ewan MacColl's "The Travelling People"

The Johnstons were a popular Irish group in the late 1960s and early 1970s, out of Slane, a small village north of Dublin, Ireland (more recently known for its annual outdoor concerts at Slane Castle). The band gained fame on both sides of the Atlantic. The final lineup was stabilized in 1967, with sisters Luci and Adrienne Johnston, plus Mick Moloney and Paul Brady. The group was influenced by traditional Irish music, skiffle, and of course the American folk revival of the '60s, with which they are most often associated today.

Adrienne Johnston, the lead singer in The Johnstons, died in 1981 in Minneapolis of a broken neck after a fall, she is buried in a cemetery in Slane, Co. Meath, her gravestone says that she died 27 May 1981 (age 35). The official verdict was accident, but many believe she was murdered. An Irish Independent article of Dec. 16, 1989 strongly implies that she was a victim of domestic violence. She apparently died in a fall at home but the death was ruled as accidental; the medical examiner expressed "concerns about this case" to a family member.

Adrienne Johnston, the lead singer died tragically in 1981 having remained in USA after the band split. Mick Moloney went back to college eventually becoming head of the folklore dept at Penn State University PA and getting deeply involved in the development of Irish folk music in North America. He still plays regularly and makes records from time to time. Lucy Johnston is a well known and successful photographer in Dublin. Paul Brady has moved on a little bit too.
