Franz Schubert's Impromptus are a series of eight pieces for solo piano composed in 1827. They were published in two sets of four impromptus each: the first two pieces in the first set were published in the composer's lifetime as Op. 90; the second set was published posthumously as Op. 142 in 1839 (with a dedication added by the publisher to Franz Liszt)

Schubert did not live to see the publication of his three impromptus composed in May 1828. And, to my mind, anyone who practices and performs the piece should here come to a personal decision based on the facts.
Longtime fans of the pianistic genius of Claudio Arrau will no doubt already have his transcendent performances of Schubert's sonatas, impromptus, Moments musicaux, and Klavierstücke that he recorded for Philips in the early '80s and they will already have imbibed deeply and at length of their imponderable sublimity.

Claudio Arrau León (February 7, 1903 - June 9, 1991) was a Chilean pianist known for his interpretations of a vast repertoire spanning from the baroque to 20th-century composers, especially Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms and Debussy. He is widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. Arrau was born in Chillán, Chile, the son of Carlos Arrau, an ophthalmologist who died when Claudio was only a year old, and Lucrecia León Bravo de Villalba, a piano teacher. He belonged to an old, prominent family of Southern Chile.
