Today, the Wright brothers are regarded as the "fathers of modern aviation. Wilbur Wright died in Dayton, Ohio, on May 30, 1912. Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867, near Millville, Indiana, the middle child in a family of five children. His father, Milton Wright, was a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. His mother was Susan Catherine Koerner Wright. As a child, Wilbur's playmate was his younger brother, Orville, born in 1871.

Wright Brothers Day is an annual United States national observation. It is codified in the US Code and Wright Brothers Day commemorates the first successful flights in a heavier than air, mechanically propelled airplane, made by Orville and Wilbur Wright on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The Wright brothers were American brothers, inventors and aviation pioneers. Orville Wright ( August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948 ). Wilbur Wright ( April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912 ). Presidential Proclamation - Wright Brothers Day, 2014. Wright brothers day, 2014

It’s a chilly, breezy day in December 1903. Wilbur Wright stands on the beach in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, staring at the sky above him. Soaring overhead in an airplane is his brother Orville-he’s in the middle of the world’s first successful piloted engine-powered airplane flight. Today the Wright brothers are remembered as innovative engineers, and their history-making flight inspired generations of future fliers.

They achieved the first recorded flight on 17 December 1903. Over the next ten years, they continued to develop the aircraft making a significant contribution to the development of the modern aeroplane. Their particular contribution was in the effective control of an aeroplane, through their three-axis control system. This basic principle is still used today. For some years I have been afflicted with the belief that flight is possible to man. My disease has increased in severity and I feel that it will soon cost me an increased amount of money if not my life. I have been trying to arrange my affairs in such a way that I can devote my entire time for a few months to experiment in this field. Wilbur Wright, Letter to Octave Chanute (13 May 1900).
