The Beatles performed their 282nd and final show at the Cavern on August 3rd, 1963. They’d already scored two Number One hits in Britain with Please Please Me and From Me to You. Only one month after their Cavern farewell, they saw their fourth single, She Loves You, turn gold on its way to becoming the biggest-selling single ever issued in Britain. Certainly the best Beatles album- it shows every side of them. Their rocking side (the opening track, Getting Better, the reprise), their soft, melodic, beautiful side (She's Leaving Home), their experimental side (Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Fixing A Hole, Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite!, Within You Without You, and A Day In The Life of course. and their pop side. When I'm Sixty Four, With a Little Help From My Friends, Good Morning Good Morning, Lovely Rita. Sgt. Pepper is the ultimate moment in rock. An absolute landmark.
This is the first Beatles album that's entirely comprised of original material. John Lennon and Paul McCartney had grown into such strong songwriters that they no longer needed to rely on covers. 10. ‘With The Beatles’. Although Lennon and McCartney wrote some great tunes on their second LP ("All My Loving," "I Wanna Be Your Man" and "It Won't be Long"), the covers on 1963's With The Beatles are the real highlights. George Harrison almost manages to one-up Chuck Berry on "Beethoven," while Motown classics "Please Mister Postman," "You Really Got A Hold On Me" and "Money (That's What I Want)" are Beatle-ized to the point that you nearly forget about the original.
