A diminutive singer with a powerful voice and an even stronger attitude, Ann Peebles was one of the artists who defined Willie Mitchell's legendary Memphis soul label Hi Records, along with Al Green and, later, . Easily the best female singer in the Hi stable, Peebles ranked among the finest deep Southern soul singers of the decade, notching an instant classic with her 1973 hit "I Can't Stand the Rain. Ann stayed pretty faithfully to the Hi Records formula and that was not a bad thing. There are a few hints at disco-ish grooves on her second to last album, but some of her strongest soul material on here comes from the awesome 'Handwriting Is On The Wall' album. Despite the fact that it actually came out in 78, it was considered to be retro even then, sounding much rawer and soulful than most music from this time.

Great Soul live album from Ann Peebles. Terrific singer with an awesome band aside. Crazy keyboard solos, great guitar player and a fine soul version of Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is. Even better than the original her cover of this 80s hit, IMO, showing that Soul Music can also rewrite some Rock standard songs, somehow similar to the likes of Alice Rusells version of "Seven Nation Army" from White Stripe ( Alice Russell - Under The Munka Moon II ). 5 stars!
