Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven is the second studio album by Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor, released as a double album on 9 October 2000 on vinyl by Constellation and 8 November 2000 on CD by Kranky. The four tracks on Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven are composed of individually named internal movements.
Lift Your Skinny Fists is one of the most special albums I've ever had the opportunity to experience. Every listen is just like a long journey and it's not a common one. This is the kind of journey that changes your life forever. I'd love to describe my relationship with this record but, honestly, it is way too complex, I feel a weird metaphysical and transcendental connection. Antennas To Heaven: Moya Sings Baby-O, Edgy Swingset Acid, She Dreamt She Was A Bulldozer She Dreamt She Was Alone in An Empty Field, Deathkamp Drone, Antennas To Heaven.
However, Lift plays like an oddly transitional album: much of the first disc presents a refinement of the sound that crystallized on 1999's Slow Riot EP, while the second disc flirts with moments of vertiginous shoegazing, looser rock drumming and reckless crescendos of unalloyed noise. Succinctly, the first disc is easily continuous with their earlier work; the second disc might just be the future. Real innovation in a leaderless nontet must be geologically slow. Lift Your Skinny Fists succeeds precisely because it utilizes Godspeed You Black Emperor!'s numbers in a way that previous works did not. Lift opens up its sound to various voices and influences within the collective, letting moments of pop/rock, ambient and even hip-hop blossom where once there was only gravelly symphonics and aural landscape. Those moments were, for me, nothing short of thrilling.
Black Emperor, released in 2000 as a double album. The whole album is instrumental, except for sampled voice inserts. The samples on the album are often used to send some satirical or political message.
Black Emperor, The second proper album from the Canadian instrumentalists consists of four independent works(each 18-22 minutes long). yes, that's 2 songs per. Essentially, you get one disc on which Godspeed You Black Emperor tinkers with their sound a little bit, and one on which they deliver exactly what you've been expecting.
While there are certainly crescendos, there is no such predictable pattern repeated among the works on Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven - it's loaded with dynamics, unexpected sections, strong emotions and beauty. The album opener, "Storm," is a leap for GY!BE that, alone, makes this release worth getting. It's a rapturous work that rises with a potent melancholy, driven by heartrending emotions . Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Track Listing - Disc 2.
Black Emperor make me feel. Unfortunately, this is impossible, not because the emotions are too subtle or impossible to underline, but because I'm not good enough. So much of the music that we hold dear stands side by side with us, as our peer, joining hands or marrying voices or calling to arms, but for all the inspiring qualities of Lift Your Skinny Fists it is never once a viable possibility that the minds behind the composition of its schizophrenic and soaring peaks and troughs are Just Guys That. But in spite of and due to all of these obstacles, Lift Your Skinny Fists is worth it, so worth it, like running a steeplechase and winning by half a metre. Every ounce of energy you invest into this record comes back in the breathtaking ymbal/bass crescendos peppered throughout.
Canada's Godspeed You Black Emperor raise the ante on their already ambitious orchestral rock by releasing a double CD of material as their second full-length album. The group combines the drums and guitar of typical rock-band instrumentation with horns and strings to create a music built around drones and slowly evolving melodic figures. is around 20-minutes long, consisting of individual movements that are about seven-minutes long. It may sound repetitive, but this is not the case.
