Muddy Waters' first 78 rpm record in 1941 listed him using his birth name, McKinley Morganfield. The late 1940s–mid-1950s record releases by Aristocrat Records and Chess Records sometimes used "Muddy Waters and His Guitar" as well as Muddy Waters List of singles with title, year, label, chart peak, and reference(s). She's All Right", "Sad, Sad Day".

Muddy Waters' performance, which included his electric slide guitar playing. He recalled: They thought I was a Big Bill Broonzy I wasn't. I had my amplifier and Spann and I was going to do a Chicago thing. In 1972, he won his first Grammy Award, for Best Ethnic or Traditional Recording for They Call Me Muddy Waters, a 1971 album of old, but previously unreleased recordings. Later in 1972, he flew to England to record the album The London Muddy Waters Sessions. The album was a follow-up to the previous year's The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions.

For the middle album of his Johnny Winter-produced, late-'70s musical trilogy, blues giant Muddy Waters brought a new spirit to some familiar material. On the powerful "33 Years," Waters punctuates his tale of lost love with snaky slide guitar, assisted by Horton's wailing electric harp. Who Do You Trust" features some of Waters' dirtiest vocals, the bluesman growling the lyrics while Winter layers his twangy slide above Horton's harp and Perkins' mournful ivories.

Muddy bought his first electric guitar in 1944, and by 1946, he was gigging regularly with Jimmy Rogers and Little Walter. By 1949, Muddy and his band –– which by then included, along with Rogers and Jacobs, Baby Face Leroy Foster doubling on guitar and drums –– were packing in crowds at the Du Drop Lounge on Chicago’s South Side, and also recording for Aristocrat Records, a small Jazz and R & B label whose owners included two Polish-born Jews named Leonard and Phil Chess. His wife Marva said that he had had a little bit of a turn but that he was all right. Then he came on the phone and said he was feeling fine and not to worry, and was I being a good boy and such. There was just something about the name Muddy Waters. And that picture on the first album; the whole look of the Chess label. You know that song, Only nineteen years old, she’s got ways like a baby child ?

On Morganfield's marriage license & musician's Union Card he indicates the year of his birth as 1913. His place of birth was, in fact, in Issaquena County near Rolling Fork. However, his gravestone remains dated as 1915. As with much of the blues genre, innuendo played an important role in lyrical interpretation. The term 'muddy waters' could be construed as an oblique reference to NSU. Such reference perhaps picked up on the Cream album: Cream (2) - Fresh Cream. Morganfield was inducted into the 'Rock And Roll Hall of Fame' in 1987 (Performer).
