Zuma is the seventh studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young, released on Reprise Records in November 1975. Upon release, it peaked at on the Billboard 200. In 1997, the album received a RIAA gold certification. The death of guitarist and bandmate Danny Whitten from a drug overdose in 1972 affected Young greatly, and left the Crazy Horse band without its leader and songwriter.
Neil Young boasted of steering his career into the ditch in the early 1970s, choosing to make sad, lonely, difficult records in the wake of Harvest’s wide success. The Ditch Trilogy (as Young enthusiasts dubbed it) of Time Fades Away, Tonight’s the Night , and On the Beach marks his creative peak-yet for decades, this era was neglected and incomplete. In Waging Heavy Peace, Young’s 2012 memoir, the 1973 live album is mentioned exactly twice, which is approximately 1,000 times fewer than his electric Lincoln and his Pono music service. Even when major missing pieces of his ’70s catalog were patched in 2003, Time Fades Away was left to rot in the archives.

Producers David Briggs, Neil Young & Tim Mulligan. More Neil Young and Crazy Horse albums.
If Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and Ragged Glory are the two finest studio albums Neil Young recorded with Crazy Horse, Zuma certainly qualifies as a close third. Recorded in 1975, Zuma exudes both a sense of focus and a tentative optimism, two qualities that were completely MIA from the bleak Time Fades Away/Tonight's the Night/On the Beach trilogy that preceded it.

That Time Neil Young Reassembled Crazy Horse for ‘Zuma’. So Young called Crazy Horse, who had undergone an incredibly tumultuous two years. The departures of Nils Lofgren and Jack Nitzsche after the death of Danny Whitten meant that they were down to just the rhythm section of bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina. But they picked up a new guitar player, Frank Poncho Sampedro, and were back in business. Listen to Neil Young's 'Cortez the Killer'. Perhaps it’s the proximity to his time with his other band that helped ignite Zuma
