John Pizzarelli takes so naturally to these Ellington classics that if you didn't know better, you might think they were written for him. Following With a Song in My Heart, the 2008 tribute to songwriting icon Richard Rodgers, and, prior to that, 2006's Dear Mr. Sinatra, it would seem that Pizzarelli is systematically checking off all of those to whom he feels indebted. Rockin' in Rhythm doesn't stray all that far stylistically from those previous outings: Pizzarelli isn't out to rewrite history here, just to celebrate a hero. On the zippy opening "In a Mellow Tone," Pizzarelli, his rhythm crew, and his brass section come out swinging.

Of the four recordings of "Rockin' in Rhythm" that Duke Ellington made in 1931, there is debate about which one is the best. Most refer to the Brunswick recording from January 14, although the band also made one for Okeh and two for Victor. The Victor recordings remained in the vault for eight years, which may say something about which versions Victor thought were better. Fitzgerald said of the recording sessions for the album that the spontaneity, "while fun at times, was kind of nerve-wracking. Rockin' in Rhythm" is the lead track of the album, pairing up Fitzgerald's improvisational scat singing with Ellington's orchestra. The album was part of a series of Songbooks in which Fitzgerald paid tribute to composers such as Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer, and George and Ira Gershwin.

Duke Ellington and his Orchestra is perhaps the greatest of all Jazz bands. The group stayed together for over fifty years and recorded and wrote some of America's greatest music. The band started in New York City under name of the Washingtonians in 1923, they then briefly became known as Duke Ellington and his Kentucky Club Orchestra, then as Duke Ellington and his Cotton Club Orchestra from 1927 to 1930. It was through weekly radio broadcasts from the Cotton Club that the orchestra gained nationwide exposure and became famous.
