David Kramer (born 27 June 1951) is a South African singer, songwriter, playwright and director, most notable for his musicals about the Cape Coloured communities, and for his early opposition to apartheid. His follow-up album, Die Verhaal van Blokkies Joubert, a portrait of a has-been Springbok rugby player, rocketed him into the public eye and produced the singles Blokkies Joubert and Die Royal Hotel both of which topped singles charts on various South African Radio stations. The album reached number 11 on the South African LP charts. It was also with Petersen that he created Fairyland and Kat & the Kings all to critical acclaim, the latter having successful runs on Broadway and in London's West End. His enduring friendship with Taliep led to a work relationship based upon mutual respect that lasted until Taliep's murder in 2006.

Taliep Petersen, who has been murdered at his home in Cape Town aged 56, made up, with his long-time collaborator, David Kramer, South Africa's leading musical partnership, one that went back to the success of District Six, The Musical, which opened at Cape Town's Baxter Theatre in April 1987. With the unbanning of the African National Congress and the release of Nelson Mandela around the corner, it was part of the changing political climate. Their biggest international success was Kat and the Kings (1998). Last year, Petersen recorded his first Afrikaans solo album. For Kramer, what his musical partner did in his career was "put the folk music of Cape Town back on the map, giving it a dignity and a profile that it perhaps hadn't had. He had a wonderful natural musical talent. He always said it was a God-given gift.
Kat and the Kings is a musical with a book and lyrics by David Kramer and music by Taliep Petersen. Set in late-1950s South Africa, it focuses on teenager Kat Diamond, who believes he's the best singer and dancer in District Six, a multi-racial slum in Cape Town.
