as brothers Candles in the rain. Lay down, lay down Lay it all down Let your white birds smile up At the ones who stand and frown Lay down, lay down Lay it all down Let your white birds smile up At the ones who stand and frown. We were so close, there was no room We bled inside each other's wounds We all had caught the same disease And we all sang the songs of peace. Melanie’s iconic 1970 tribute to her experience performing in the previous year’s Woodstock Festival. The song became one of the peace anthems of the anti war movement. She collaborated with The Edwin Hawkins Singers who had a hit the previous year with the spiritual Oh Happy Day.
Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" was the second single from Melanie Safka's 1970 album Candles in the Rain. The song proved to be her breakthrough hit in the United States, climbing to no. 6 on the Billboard's Hot 100 and no. 3 on the Cash Box Top 100. The record was ranked no. 23 on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1970.
Once "Oh Happy Day" started being played in other parts of the country and the group was made aware of its rising success on the radio, they began to get in contact with the right people in the industry who helped them get a major record deal. The group signed on with the newly created Pavilion label (distributed by Buddah), and released a second LP, called He's A Friend Of Mine, in 1969, but it was "Oh Happy Day" that rocketed to sales of more than a million copies within two months. The choir's second LP Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts was the 1970 Melanie single "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," on which the label listed the performers as "Melanie with The Edwin Hawkins Singers". The song peaked at No. 6 in the .

The Edwin Hawkins Singers (who had scored a 1969 hit with "Oh Happy Day") provide the anthemic, gospel-infused chorus, but Melanie's career-best lead vocals prove a surprisingly capable match for their soulful fervor. At her most impassioned, Melanie sounds like a more controlled Janis Joplin, but she alternates those bursts with a folky, Judy Collins-like delivery on the verses that makes the ecstatic swelling of the chorus that much more powerful. Best of all, the lyrics don't try for any grand eration, instead preferring to immortalize one particular.

Written By Jim Beviglia // August 19, 2013. 22-year-old Melanie Safka was one of the more unlikely performers at Woodstock in 1969. Yet when she stepped out onto the stage on Friday night, August 15, 1969 just before 11 PM, she was greeted by the audience lighting candles (and lighters) in an effort to psychically beat back the rain that had been falling. Not only did Melanie perform a successful set ( I went on as an unknown and I came off that stage as a celebrity, she recently told American Songwriter), but she also had the inspiration for her first Top 10 hit. Speaking of how she wrote (Lay Down) Candles In The Rain, Melanie says, I left that field with that song in my head, the anthemic part
