Malcolm Bradbury described Malcolm Lowry as having a curious internationalism. That is what has perhaps led him to be less well known in his home city than he might have been, and is also what the Bluecoat has attempted to reflect in this new exhibition marking the centenary of his birth. Those who do know of Lowry will probably have read his magnum opus, Under The Volcano. But few will be aware that the author of what has been described as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century was born the son of a Liverpool cotton broker in New Brighton. In fact, there are many intriguing aspects. Lowry, Jazz and ‘The Day of the Dead’ by Graham Collier.

Day of the Dead is celebrated in different ways in different locations throughout Mexico. Festivities tend to be more colorful in the southern region, particularly in the states of Michoacan, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. In rural areas, celebrations are mostly solemn whereas in bigger cities they are sometimes irreverent

Graham Collier spent the last few years of his life living on a Greek island, so a famous line from Greek philosophy isn't inappropriate, even if he would have questioned its underlying premise: "You can't step twice into the same river". This is a virtual mantra for jazz musicians, whose conjoined blessing and curse is that everything is in the moment and then is heard no more  . In 1977, Collier wrote an important suite called The Day of the Dead. It was based on Malcolm Lowry's novel Under the Volcano and was presented, significantly, at the Ilkley Literature Festival.

"Hear Us O Lord from Heaven Thy Dwelling Place".
