Civilized Evil is an album by French Jazz-Fusion artist Jean-Luc Ponty. Recorded in 1980 in Los Angeles with JLP's band members Joaquin Lievano (guitars) Chris Rhyne (keyboards) Randy Jackson (bass) and ex-band member Mark Craney (drums). Tracks include "Demagomania", "Forms of Life", "Once a Blue Planet" and more. Jean-Luc publicly announced during the release of this album that he was growing uncomfortable with having his music labeled as "jazz fusion", and he wanted to branch out and be free to do whatever he wanted. This is a brilliant album, but it was a more laid-back fusion. It has its serious rockin' moments, but the overall mood is a more laid-back funky-fusion that signalled the beginning of the end of Ponty's fusion days.
Jean-Luc Ponty (born 29 September 1942) is a French jazz violinist and composer. Ponty was born into a family of classical musicians on 29 September 1942 in Avranches, France. His father taught violin, his mother taught piano. At sixteen, he was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, graduating two years later with the institution's highest honor, Premier Prix (first prize). He was hired by the Concerts Lamoureux symphony in which he played for three years.
I have to admit already being a great fan of Steve Hillage at the time and whilst the artists vary considerably there is that edge of ' space' and ' fusion' to both artists whether on electric violin or guitar. Also around this time were equally good ECM artists like Ralp Towner and Jan Garbarek. If you HATE keyboard driven music you should probably pass on Jean-Luc Ponty's Civilized Evil. That being said, Chris Ryne's work on this record is right up there, and perhaps surpasses, the best work by any other keyboard player that JLP has ever worked with. Fast and furious solo lines blend seamlessly with sequenced passages and funky electric piano comps.
Ponty plays with his accustomed fluid virtuosity; the five-piece group ranges from standard Ponty fusion to mild funk; the rhythm section is sometimes more grandly recorded than before; and occasionally, one can hear some embryonic sequenced structures that would be explored further on in the decade.
