Gigi Gryce (born George General Grice J. November 28, 1925 – March 14, 1983), later Basheer Qusim, was an American jazz saxophonist, flautist, clarinetist, composer, arranger, and educator. While his performing career was relatively short, much of his work as a player, composer, and arranger was quite influential and well-recognized during his time. Gigi Gryce (1925-1983) was an American saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist, composer, arranger, and educator. His performing career, though notable, was very short and, in comparison to other musicians of his generation, Gryce's work is little known. Although primarily a jazz musician, Gryce studied composition with Alan Hovhaness and Daniel Pinkham at the Boston Conservatory following World War II and while there composed a number of symphonic compositions.
During 1957 altoist Gigi Gryce and trumpeter Donald Byrd co-led a quintet that sought to extend and come up with new variations to bebop
