The Complete Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong on Verve is a 1997 compilation album of recordings made by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong for Verve between 1956 and 1957. The 47 tracks are collated from the three studio albums Ella and Louis, Ella and Louis Again, and Porgy and Bess. Two tracks are from a 1957 concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Disc One. "Can't We Be Friends?" (Paul James, Kay Swift) – 3:48. Isn't This a Lovely Day?" (Irving Berlin) – 6:17.

Here, you get all of Ella and Louis, the double-album sets Ella and Louis Again and Porgy and Bess, and two live tracks recorded at the Hollywood Bowl in 1956 - all in an unusual three-CD album that partially unfolds into an accordion-file (what will Verve's inventive packaging wizards think of next?). There are two booklets, one of which contains a rare recent interview with producer Norman Granz, and the other the notes from the original albums. Of the two wonderfully relaxed Ella and Louis albums, with their Oscar Peterson-driven rhythm quartets, the sequel seems a more diverse, more.

Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 – June 15, 1996) was an American jazz singer often referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz and Lady Ella. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing and intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. After tumultuous teenage years, Fitzgerald found stability in musical success with the Chick Webb Orchestra, performing across the country, but most often associated with the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Having previously collaborated in the late 1940s for the Decca label, this was the first of three albums that Fitzgerald and Armstrong were to record together for Verve Records, later followed by 1957's Ella and Louis Again and 1959's Porgy and Bess.

Louis Armstrong, meanwhile, was already widely recognized as perhaps the biggest star of jazz in the world, and was easily one of the world's most beloved entertainers. The pairing of the two was the brainchild of Norman Granz, the head of Verve records and the producer for all three of the albums on this set. It was Granz, who was managing the career of Ella at the time, who came up with the concept of recording the two together, and pursued Armstrong. Constantly touring, Armstrong was a difficult man to track down. But Granz persevered, and this set is a celebration of his triumph
