It's a life of mass confusion, it's a heavy load I'm ready to trade the fast lane for a country road. There's a New York skyline but there's no sunshine Down on Broadway Watching the stocks rise keeps them paralyzed Up on park place. It's a 5th Avenue elusion digging for the gold I'm ready to trade the fast lane for a country road. I'm gonna take a turn for the better It's been a long hard ride This can't go on forever I need a Sunday drive. Let me get behind the wheel before I lose control And trade this fast lane for a country road.

Fast Lanes And Country Roads. Lyrics for album: 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Barbara Mandrell (2000). I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool. Lyrics for album: Barbara Mandrell: Super Hits (2000). Holdin' On (To The Love I Got). Lyrics for album: Christmas At Our House (1984). From Our House To Yours. I'll Be Home For Christmas.

For Barbara Mandrell, this was the first duet album she had ever recorded and would be one of two duet albums she would release during her career. David Houston had already been a successful Country singer the previous decade with his Country hit, "Almost Persuaded". Mandrell on the other hand was very new to the Country music business, only releasing her first album in 1971. Their duet album spawned two major Country hits, "After Closing Time", which reached the Top 10, peaking at The second single, "I Love You, I Love You" was another Top 10 Country hit,.

For over 40 years, Barbara Mandrell's mighty voice fit traditional country, pop and adult contemporary sounds like a broken-in pair of boots. After a more traditionally country run with Columbia and producer Billy Sherrill from '69 to '74, Mandrell signed with ABC/Dot. A new label and a new producer in Tom Collins set the wheels in motion for a long run of more pop and adult y hits that made the most of a great American vocalist's talents. With Collins, Mandrell dominated the television and radio airwaves in the '70s and early '80s, becoming the first-ever two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year recipient

Barbara Mandrell hit her commercial peak in the early 1980s, when her only serious rival as the queen of country-pop crossover was Olivia Newton-John. With her TV variety series, glitzy stage show, and commercial success, some questioned whether Mandrell was country at all, though she reasserted her loyalty when she recorded "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool," revived here as a kickoff duet by Reba McEntire and Kenny Chesney.
