Fred Tompkins (born in St. Louis, Missouri, 1943) is an American jazz flautist and composer, best known for his work as a composer of third stream music. Tompkins played in his native Missouri for several years after high school and attended the St. Louis Institute of Music starting in 1964, pairing it with summer courses at Berklee College and the Aspen Music School.

Fred Tompkins Fred Tompkins completed his early studies of music in St. Louis but lived in NYC from '72-'90 where he wrote and recorded compositions for a wide variety of small ensembles to include Elvin Jones, David Liebman, Richard Davis and many other great musicians. Interested in forging his own style of jazz/classical synthesis, he also wrote vocal works to poetry by Keats, Dickinson & Michael Castro.
