Yet Wrong Way Up would be far more euphoric than either expected. perhaps slightly Eraserhead in feeling. In the first post-Cold War spring, with the Berlin Wall down and Nelson Mandela freed, the feelings were hopeful. It was ’Hey, the future looks good. Eno was enjoying the World Cup that year and his wife, Anthea Norman-Taylor, recently had given birth to a daughter. All those elements, those loops, combined in that particular way, he said. The World Cup, my daughter, and me singing again. While filling out the album back in the UK, Cale sensed that Eno was growing comfortable with vocal songs again and proposed a full collaboration. It would be a pop album; Eno would sing on it; he would tour with Cale for it. Eno tacitly accepted the terms. Getting Eno to sing again on record was a coup.

No, Eno and Cale's WRONG WAY UP is not what I'd classify as a "prog" album. It is, rather, a pop album, and one which I thoroughly enjoy. This 1990 release found Brian Eno (who should need no introduction here) and former cello prodigy John Cale (ex Velvet Underground) entering the studio for a collaborative effort which would see Eno putting aside his longstanding ambient experiments to record his first new pop songs (with vocals, yet!) since 1977's BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE.
Eno returned in June 2005 with Another Day on Earth, his first major album since Wrong Way Up (with John Cale) to prominently feature vocals (a trend he continued with Everything That Happens Will Happen Today). The album differs from his 1970s solo work due to the impact technological advances on musical production, evident in its semi-electronic production. Eno has spoken of an early and ongoing interest in exploring light in a similar way to his work with sound. He started experimenting with the medium of video in 1978.

Wrong Way Up, their first out-and-out collaboration, grew out of Eno’s production of Cale’s Words for the Dying last year, and the result is a gem, if an oddly anachronistic one. Their trademarks - haunting synth patterns, carefully plucked guitar strings, self-consciously simple lyrics, chantlike choruses and echoey production - have been so plundered by their protégés over the years that they have lost some of their initial mystique. On Empty Frame, Cale and Eno become warped, profound Beach Boys: Above a pulsating swell, Eno coos, We push the empty frame of reason out the cabin door/No, we won’t be needing reason anymore. And Crime in the Desert cheerfully recounts the travails of a desperado over a kitschy rock & roll piano.
