The formula for her music is simple enough – two guitars, a drummer, and a voice. The music is a perfect example of taking elements of what has come before and creating something raw, unique, and intriguing.
Raven-haired Chicago youngster Miss Alex White and her Red Orchestra have been blasting out their staggeringly simple, yet sonically monolithic sound for over two years now and developed a dedicated following in the Midwest of the USA. It's no coincidence that their new album title, Space & Time, is also one of the secrets of their impressive sound. How they manage to fill space within songs with lush and satisfyingly timed tones of rock-n-roll's bleeding edge, in this age of constant desperation, is a wonder to the ears.
Photo: Courtesy of In The Red Records. You know a trend has laminated its AARP card when a "supergroup" arrives. SSM features members of longtime Detroit garage-rock stalwarts the Hentchmen and the Sights. Wesley Kerstens and Edward Altesleben, formerly of Detroit's crazed space-punks Clone Defects, now back Chicago's Alex White. The singer marries a scorned but still sunny sensibility to a scruffy moan, like Patti Smith nourished more on Blow Pops than Baudelaire. Her self-titled debut (on In the Red) is Detroit all over: from the Stooges' pantherlike prowl to groovy soul strut, even including some hand-clapped power pop (remember, Marshall Crenshaw was from Detroit too). The album's producer? Detroit's great Jim Diamond (White Stripes, the Dirtbombs), of course.

At the same time, White teamed with Ponys guitarist Jared Gummere and Baseball Furies drummer Matt Williams to form the Hot Machines, on top of everything else beginning her collegiate career at DePaul University. In mid-2003 Dymarets suffered a fatal asthma attack, but White and Saathoff forged on, founding their own Mission X label to release Miss Alex White & Chris Playboy's debut single, "Young Monsters," in January 2004. But when Saathoff himself was killed by a hit-and-run driver weeks later, White nearly abandoned music for good.
White began playing under the pseudonym Miss Alex White and released her first music in 2003. Her project, Miss Alex White and Chris Playboy (Chris Saathoff) made several recordings together. Saathoff died in a car accident on February 13, 2004 and White was responsible for creating the Chris Saathoff Foundation following his death. Soon after, she formed Miss Alex White and the Red Orchestra. The group recorded their first self-titled album with producer Jim Diamond in Detroit, and their second "Space & Time" in Costa Mesa, California at the Distillery with Mike McHugh
