Early a decade ago, Dave Graney was a household name who terrified young girls when he accepted his "King of Pop" award for ARIA's best male artist with a pepperoni stuffed down his pink velour jumpsuit. Having subverted the mainstream, he turned left at a fork in the road, which took him and his musical collaborator, wife Clare Moore, up to the Dandenongs where they built their own studio, Ponderosa. One listen to their recent double album, Hashish (Graney) and Liquor (Moore), makes you wonder what exotic, peculiar life they lead there.

Over 25 years, Graney has evolved from the scabrous front man of the Moodists into the dandy poet king of the antipodean underground. His half of this double-CD set, Hashish, is the only record ever to filch from both Phil Silvers and the 19th-century essayist Charles Mackay. His sinister-sensitive croon floats through a lotus-blossom landscape of heady, jazz-inflected tunes. I Wanna Get Lost Again is a masterful exercise in delay and release. Liquor, a companion piece by Dave's long-term musical collaborator, Clare Moore, sets surreal stories in a smoky cabaret lounge.

Clare Christina Moore is an Australian musician, songwriter, arranger, producer and performer whose principal instrument is the drums. She has also performed as a keyboard player, singer and vibraphone player. Moore writes and performs with Dave Graney, her husband, fronting various bands including The Moodists, Dave Graney 'n' the Coral Snakes, the Lurid Yellow Mist featuring Dave Graney and Clare Moore and, currently, Dave Graney & the mistLY.
