Album (also known as Compact Disc or Cassette depending on the format) is the fifth album by the English rock band Public Image Ltd, released on 27 January 1986. A departure from their previous releases, John Lydon was advised by trusted music producer Bill Laswell to take on an all-star cast of session and trusted musicians, including Steve Vai, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tony Williams and Ginger Baker. The resulting album gave PiL one of its highest charting songs, "Rise".

On this song, Public Image Ltd. lead singer John Lydon takes the persona of a corporate fat cat, arrogantly explaining how he knows what's best. It is, of course, satire. Lydon rarely got on well with any of his corporate overlords and takes a dim view of big business. It's a theme that remained relevant decades later; in our 2015 interview with Lydon, he discussed the song. Big business considers itself very wise, when in fact, it's not," he said. This version appears as "Love Song" on Commercial Zone, a 1984 album of recordings Levene took from the This Is What You Want sessions that he released without consent. This really isn't a love song: we know because Lydon repeats the title 44 times. The video was filmed in Century City, a flashy business area in Los Angeles with lots of tall buildings. Lydon plays the role of a tycoon, riding around in a classic car as he looks over his kingdom.

It's hard not to feel slightly disappointed by PiL's first new studio album in two decades. A comeback shouldn't sound this much like treading water, surely? John Lydon's themes are predictable – dreary England; the outsider's rage against the mainstream; incompetent politicians; the creative value of chaos – while the music sounds too generically PiL, its goth-funk-disco shuffle only occasionally working up a head of steam.

Following that strong three-album run, the band embarked on a turbulent course marked by slipshod albums and regrettable production choices, epitomizing themselves as a sort of tragic case of potential gone unfulfilled. But for a band that built its name on ripping up the rule book, what do Public Image Ltd. sound like 20 years since their last album, and over 30 since their first? It's hard to decide if This Is PiL is a surprise or merely par for the course.

With a new album on the shelves and a string of tour dates ahead, we recently caught up with the man formerly known as Johnny Rotten to get his take on the state of PiL, the music industry and much more. GUITAR AFICIONADO: In recent years, it seems PiL has been lumped in with a lot of bands of the same era - Gang of Four, Wire, Cabaret Voltaire - as "post-punk. How do you feel about that as a descriptor for your music? I don't like any label or category. And he wrote some bloody excellent songs along the way! Public Image Limited's new album, This is PiL is out now. The band are on the road in North America, and you can find their current tour dates here.
