Father Brown is a fictional Roman Catholic priest and amateur detective who is featured in 53 short stories published between 1910 and 1936 written by English novelist G. K. Chesterton. Father Brown solves mysteries and crimes using his intuition and keen understanding of human nature. Chesterton loosely based him on the Rt Rev. Msgr. John O'Connor (1870–1952), a parish priest in Bradford, who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922.

It was an ve object, with dwarf plants in pots and long, striped blinds oflemon yellow and white. It stood specially high above the street, and inthe usual patchwork way of London, a flight of steps from the streetran up to meet the front door almost as a fire-escape might run up toa first-floor window. Valentin stood and smoked in front of theyellow-white blinds and considered them long. The most incredible thing about miracles is that they happen. A fewclouds in heaven do come together into the staring shape of one humaneye.
Sherlock Holmes might be sexier, but for Michael Newton, GK Chesterton's atmospheric Father Brown stories are the best the genre has ever seen. If there is debate about who is the greatest literary detective, there can be no dispute as to who is the most recognisable.

Who thinks Father Brown should be winning more awards? Well, you can help.
Father Brown, one of the most quirkily genial and lovable characters to emerge from English detective fiction. So far I have been enthralled with Father Brown, a rumpled and humble version of Hercule Poirot. While Poirot is tidy, arrogant and opinionated, Father Brown is self-deprecating, courteous and quiet. But Father Brown's mind, like Poirot's, is a steel trap. And, like Poirot, Father Brown has a way of circumventing the obvious to zone in on hidden reality. Anyone who is a fan of Poirot certainly must be a fan of Father Brown.
