The sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord, BWV 1027–1029, are three sonatas composed by Johann Sebastian Bach for viola da gamba and harpsichord. Although the dating of Bach's three sonatas for viola da gamba and cembalo has presented problems for musicologists, because only an autograph score of the first sonata BWV 1027 survives, there is now general consensus that the works were written in Leipzig at some time in the late 1730s and early 1740s.

Renaissance Instruments In the 15-16C, instruments underwent major technical improvement over their medieval forebears, and they were increasingly played by skilled amateurs in public events. Composers began writing pieces for instruments alone, not just as accompaniment to vocal performance.

In the historically informed performance movement, musicians perform classical music using restored or replicated versions of the instruments for which it was originally written. Often performances by such musicians are said to be "on authentic instruments". This article consists of a list of such instruments in the European tradition, including both instruments that are now obsolete and early versions of instruments that continued to be used in later classical music.

The viol (also called viola da gamba) is any one of a family of bowed, fretted, stringed musical instruments developed in the 1400s and used primarily in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The family is related to and descends primarily from the Spanish vihuela (a guitarlike plucked string instrument). This a gamba playing position was more suited to larger instruments than was the a braccio position of the modern violin. The instrument was imported to Italy from Spain by the Borgia family. This gave rise to its Italian name viola da gamba, meaning "viol for the leg," which also helped differentiate it from the early violin family, which the Italians called viola da braccio (lit. "viol for the arm"). and was played along with the crumhorn by Henry VIII.
