Discouraged Ones (stylized discøuraged ønes) is the third full-length album by Katatonia. The album was released on April 27, 1998. This is the last Katatonia release with Micke Oretoft. It is also their last release with Jonas Renkse on drums; on future releases, he would focus on being the band's lead vocalist and contributing additional guitar work. According to Renkse, Discouraged Ones had sold roughly 20,000 copies as of 2001. All tracks written by Renkse and Nyström unless noted otherwise.

The band released two more albums, Discouraged Ones (1998) and Tonight's Decision (1999), before settling into a stable quintet lineup for all of 2000's. The band released four more albums with said lineup - Last Fair Deal Gone Down (2001), Viva Emptiness (2003), The Great Cold Distance (2006), and Night Is the New Day (2009), with the band slowly moving away from their metal sound while adding more progressive rock sounds to their work over time. After touring in support of the album, the trio recorded another EP, For Funerals to Come, which was released in early 1995. However, Le Huche left the band shortly after, and issues finding a replacement found the band break up for a year, while Renkse and Nystrom worked separately on their own projects. Discouraged Ones" rocks quite a bit more, "I Break" being a solidly rocking opener. It takes a few tracks for the now familiar hard/mellow blend to kick in, and in a more slightly refined way. Jonas Renske sings clean, but his whispering vocals were not really developed, his sound a bit lower and maybe influenced by some Euro-pop depressive singers like Ian Curtis, or Depeche Mode. As the album progresses, so does the transition. More melodic breaks appear, and by the last couple songs, Katatonia has left strong clues where they would head in the future.
