He played only a few scattered sonatas, the C minor Variations, and the Emperor Concerto. Horowitz seemed more comfortable in Beethoven's well known "Appassionata" than in any other of the composer's solo works. Horowitz recorded the ubiquitous "Moonlight" sonata three times-each time at the behest of the recording company which wanted saleable repertoire. This is by far the most successful of his three recordings.

Listen to Horowitz's breakneck tempos shift in the closing movement of the Appassionata. Listen to the heavy-handed sonorities in the opening movement of the Moonlight. Listen to the hard-body rhythms of the closing movement of the Waldstein

Piano Sonata No. 14 in C Sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 2, "Moonlight": III. Presto Agitato, 07:21. Piano Sonata No. 21 in C Major, Op. 53, "Waldstein": II. Introduzione - Adagio Molto - Attacca, 03:49. 23 in F Minor, Op. 57, "Appassionata": I. Allegro Assai, 09:35. 57, "Appassionata": III. Allegro, Ma Non Troppo - Presto, 08:00.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 57 (colloquially known as the Appassionata, meaning "passionate" in Italian) is among the three famous piano sonatas of his middle period (the others being the Waldstein, Op. 53 and Les Adieux, Op. 81a); it was composed during 1804 and 1805, and perhaps 1806, and was dedicated to Count Franz von Brunswick.

53 "Waldstein Sonata": III. Rondo: Allegretto moderato. BPM Profile Horowitz plays Beethoven Sonatas. Album starts at 174BPM, ends at 114BPM (-60), with tempos within the -BPM range. Try refreshing the page if dots are missing).
