It was through Stone Martin’s working association with Asch Records that he met Granz, and they developed both a friendship and a close working relationship. When Granz gave him the job of looking after all the art needs of Clef Records in 1948. Besides working freelance, Martin also found time to teach and when the sheer volume of his cover art alone is considered, his prodigious output is apparent. When the label released it’s initial batch of LPs in the early 1950s they featured sleeves designed by a d New Yorker, Bacon. An avid jazz fan, Bacon worked in a small local advertising agency and had got to know Lion through the Newark Hot Club. Esquire’s 1946 Award Winners Hot Jazz – Various Artists. It’s an album that screams Don Draper and nightcaps. Check it out and find yourself whisked away to another time and place. Charles Mingus Ah Um. Charles Mingus is the godfather of the upright bass, and in 1959, he put out Ah Um, which many consider to be a masterpiece and cemented his status as a legendary composer. It’s a composition, released in 1959, that is often considered the definitive jazz album. Honestly, there are some jazz purists who probably would die if they found out our generation was unfamiliar with it. Just listen to who was featured: Coltrane, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb.
It's Time! is an album recorded by a group led by American saxophonist Jackie McLean recorded in 1964 and released on the Blue Note label. All compositions by Jackie McLean except as noted. Cancellation" (Charles Tolliver) - 7:45. Revillot" (Tolliver) - 7:51. Truth" (Tolliver) - 6:30. Jackie McLean - alto saxophone. Charles Tolliver - trumpet. Herbie Hancock - piano.
It was 1956 and many big bands were struggling due to the rise of bebop and modern small group format. So at the 3rd annual Newport Jazz Festival, Ellington attempted to please the crowd with some new suites and arrangements, but the crowd was still sedated. Then finally on a two-section song, Dimuendo and Crescendo in Blue, Duke had the two sections connect with a sax solo by Paul Gonzalves and allowed him to play the solo as long as he felt like playing. Blue Train - John Coltrane Recorded in 1957, this album was Coltrane's first album as a leader. It's very interesting to hear how Coltrane was playing before he started heading to the freer, passionate playing that he later developed in the mid 60's. Did you know that just a few years earlier, Coltrane was considered just a mediocre player? He studied and performed so much that he has became an icon of musical discipline.
