Mandré was promoted by Motown as being "funkier than Parliament". However, after 3 albums which went largely unnoticed, Lewis ended his relationship with the label to pursue independent production. He retained the rights and title to the Mandré name and released a final album ("Mandré 4") by himself in 1980. Mandré, Rare Earth & Platinum Hook - Motown's Magical Spring Tour! Platinum Hook was managed by Benjamin Ashburn who signed them up along with another act Three Ounces of Love in 1977. They released their self-titled Motown album 1978. The jazz and r&b styling was similar to that of Earth Wind & Fire. They played at venues like The Cellar in New York City in 1977 and the Kool Jazz Festival in June 1978. Other acts to appear there were The Commodores and LTD and comedian James Wesley Jackson In the early 1980s they worked on an al. .
List of all Rare Earth tickets and tour dates for 2019. Originally formed at the Sunliners in 1960, the group changed its name to Rare Earth in 1968. The same year Rare Earth issued their debut album Dream/Answers on Verve Records, however the record failed to earn any attention for the group. Consisting of vocalist, saxophone and flute player Gil Bridges, lead singer and drummer Pater Hoorelbeke, bassist and trombone player John Parrish, guitarist Rod Richards, keyboard player Kenny James, and percussionist Edward Guzman, the group subsequently signed with the Motown subsidiary named after the band, Rare Earth Records. Initially making no waves.
Three Ounces Of Love is an out of print Motown diamond of the late 70’s. Never released on CD. I would say most of the tracks are outstanding and mixed the classic Motown sound with late 70s disco. The title track may have been a little late in the mix of the tons of space songs being issued after the success of Star Wars and Close Encounters. The rest of side one is still highly commercial with Don’t Worry ‘Bout My Love being one of Motown’s most overlooked ballads. Three Ounces were actually sisters from Detroit discovered by the Commodores who tried to launch them along with Platinum Hook as I recall. They had a great sound and I understand they still perform from time to time. Motown really dropped the ball on this one. The front cover should have been the back cover.
Rare Earth Album Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan and Patrice Eyries Last update: October 3, 2015. Rare Earth was active from 1969 until 1976 and was intended to release Motown's psychedelic and underground rock bands. It was run by Barney Ales. The best selling act for the label was the group Rare Earth, a Detroit band who had started in 1961 as the Sunliners. Drummer Pete Rivera and sax player Gil Bridges were originals, and were joined over the next five years by John Parrish (bass), Rod Richards (guitar), and Kenny James (keyboards). The got another top-40 hit for Prodigal with "Warm Ride", which reached in the spring of 1978. The first Rare Earth label (far left), used for their first six albums (to 510), was white with black print. The top half of the label was orange with a drawing of a tree whose top branches spelled out "RARE EARTH.
