The album was released in Japan in October of that year on Japanese record label Music Mine Inc. The band spent most of 2003 touring in support of the album, returning to Japan, the United States, Sweden, and visiting Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, Hungary, the Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom for the first time. Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined: 2004. Mono's next release was a collaboration with Japanese musician Aki Onda; whom the band met while touring New York in 2002. Mono has drawn influence from various musical and non-musical sources throughout their career.

This album is like soup. It's comforting, peaceful, filling and just feels good in your soul, yet the music (even though it's extremely dreamy) is still forceful and doesn't feel meaningless. The production and soundscapes created in these pieces are nothing short of delectable, like a small cozy fire being lit inside you, or a hug from a great friend. I'm not the biggest nerd when it comes to ambient music, but this is a compilation I really enjoyed. It's an album I hope to come back to when.

Many of the songs feature or have ties to this ever-changing titan of Japanese pop music, whether the musicians once played in his Tin Pan Alley collective or later joined him in Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). Hosono has been a big focus for the archival label Light in the Attic, from his pioneering native-tongue folk rock with Happy End to his avant-garde adventures in early sampling technology. Originally found on 1982’s Philharmony, Hosono’s first solo album following YMO’s rise, the song is fueled by a vaguely flute-y sample that loops in an endless cheerful tootle and the musician’s own sneering anxieties over not being fit enough for a very sporty crush. It’s the one moment on Pacific Breeze where the cracks of the city pop fantasy really start to show-the dark side of a genre associated with, essentially, yuppies in Tokyo.

Acid Mothers Temple Soul Collective has been in existence for more than twenty years, touring the world in various forms. Their bandleader, Kawabata Makoto, has been at the heart of the project from the beginning. Though we love sharing audio from performances (you can stream or download below, or visit the artist page on FMA), this one is also worth watching, if you have time.
