Red Letter Days is the fourth album by The Wallflowers, released in 2002. The album peaked at on the Billboard 200. Red Letter Days was the first Wallflowers record that featured Jakob Dylan playing a majority of the lead guitar parts. The album had a much more aggressive sound than any of their previous releases, especially the song "Everybody Out of the Water," which they performed on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn

While the Wallflowers were working on Red Letter Days, they recorded a cover of the Beatles' 1965 song "I'm Looking Through You" for the soundtrack to the 2001 film I Am Sam. The soundtrack was released on January 8, 2002. The first single from the Red Letter Days, "When You're On Top," was released to radio on August 16, 2002. A music video directed by Marc Webb followed. After a few false starts, Red Letter Days was released on November 5, 2002.

For years, The Wallflowers were known as the band of the son of Bob Dylan. Meanwhile, the group around proven on its own to convince Jakob Dylan. On their albums they appeared also to have more in common with that other icon of American guitar rock: Tom Petty.
