The second volume of the best-known recordings of Duke Ellington and his orchestra highlights music recorded during the Depression. Unlike many orchestras of this period, Ellington's band was quite stable. This enabled Ellington, in close collaboration with his leading soloists (Cootie Williams, Lawrence Brown, Barney Bigard, Rex Stewart, and Johnny Hodges) to write compositions in the form of concertos dedicated to individual musicians. Among these pieces are "Echoes of Harlem," a spotlight for Cootie Williams, "Trumpet in Spades," which features Rex Stewart, and the. This disc also features what is probably the album's highlight: 1935's "Reminiscing in Tempo," written in memory of his recently deceased mother.
