Bill Shaw, Tenor; James Blackwood, Lead; Cecil Blackwood, Baritone, and "Big John" Hall, one of the deepest, richest toned bass singers ever In this line-up. I'm fairly certain it was Whitey Gleason on the piano. Had the privilege of knowing these fine Christian gentlemen and miss James and Ceicl who have passed dearly. John lives in our area and I am lucky enough to see him perform occasionally. We are losing all the great singers all we will have left are the memories of them.

The Blackwood Brothers formed in 1934 in Choctaw County, Mississippi. The original members were brothers Doyle Blackwood, James Blackwood, Roy Blackwood and his son, R. W. Blackwood. In 1939 Wallace Milligan joined the group as the pianist. He was only with the quartet brielfy because he was drafted in World War II and was killed in action. Tthis is one of the few remaining photos of him with the group. Our thanks to Janice Milligan Anderson for this picture. Backstage, Elvis joined James Blackwood, Hovie Lister and J. D. Sumner for an impromtu rendition of "How Great Thou Ar. When his mother, Gladys Presley, died in 1958, Elvis and Vernon asked the Blackwood Brothers to sing for her funeral. The Blackwood Brothers were touring in North Carolina at the time, however, a plane was chartered and they were able to fly to Memphis.
