He directed his first film in 1943 but says Drunken Angel in 1948 was really his first film because that was the first one he made without official interference. Rashomon (1950), the first Japanese film to find wide distribution in the West, made Kurosawa internationally famous.

Dreams (夢 Yume, aka Akira Kurosawa's Dreams) is a 1990 magical realism film of eight vignettes written and directed by Akira Kurosawa. It was made five years after Ran, with assistance from George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and funded by Warner Bros.

Akira Kurosawa is a world-famous film director in Japan. Over this half century, he has continuously presented masterpieces which deeply affect audiences through his insights into human nature; unshaken humanism; and powerful, and drastic expressions through all his works. Mr. Kurosawa began his career as a painter, showing extraordinary talents. But, later he chose to become a film director

Akira Kurosawa was born in Tokyo on March 23, 1910. His well-to-do family can trace its lineage as far back as the 11th century, and the young Kurosawa was taught early on that he was a descendant of samurai. But despite this esteemed, distinctly Japanese background, Kurosawa’s father believed he and his siblings should be exposed to Western culture as well, so he frequently took them to see films.
