Barber: Antony & Cleopatra. The Metropolitan Opera. Leontyne Price (Cleopatra), Justino Díaz (Antony), Jess Thomas (Octavius Caesar), Ezio Flagello (Enobarbus), Rosalind Elias (Charmian). The Metropolitan Opera, Colin Davis, Thomas Schippers, Zubin Mehta, Richard Bonynge, Karl Böhm, Josef Krips, Molinari-Pradelli, Lamberto Gardelli.

Expectations were high when the Metropolitan Opera announced that the world premiere of Samuel Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra would christen its new house at Lincoln Center in the fall of 1966-a suitably grand work based on Shakespeare’s tragedy and written specifically for Leontyne Price as Cleopatra. The 26-year-old Puerto Rican–born bass Justino Díaz starred alongside Price as Antony while Ezio Flagello portrayed Antony’s friend Enobarbus. Tenor Jess Thomas brought his heroic presence to the role of Octavius Caesar, and the beloved mezzo-soprano Rosalind Elias, already a Met veteran in her 30s, sang the role of Cleopatra’s attendant Charmian.

Antony and CleopatraAntony and Cleopatra'' (opera)operatic version of the playSamuel Barber's opera ''Antony and Cleopatra. Antony and Cleopatra, Op. 40, is an opera in three acts by American composer Samuel Barber.

Antony and Cleopatra is an opera in three acts by American composer Samuel Barber. The libretto was prepared by Franco Zeffirelli based on the play Antony and Cleopatra by Shakespeare. It was first performed in New York City on September 16, 1966, at the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The idea was to have a new opera by an American composer for the gala opening of the new house. No expense was spared.

We have Leontyne Price twice in one of her signature roles, early and late. The early Leonora is on this set led by Thomas Schippers, the late one is on another RCA recording under James Levine. Both are acclaimed, and both are seriously flawed. In terms of overall musicianship, the Levine ranks hihger. Schippers was a callow conductor of Verdi, while Levine is an extremely accomplished, if not inspired one. But by the time the Levine set was made, Price's voice had noticeably frayed, particularly in her husky, now hollow, chest tones. This is a finely conducted work. Thomas Schippers is brilliant, bringing out the dramatic bang to the score with aplomb. The other great Forza recording is the one with Domingo, Price, Milnes and Cossotto, though Price is in 70's voice, darker, huskier, less vibrant and gleaming as she is here.
