The Allen Brothers (singer/banjoist Austin Allen and Lee Allen on kazoo, guitar, and occasional vocals) were one of the most popular and prolific of the early country groups. All of their music has been reissued on three Document CDs. The duo primarily played good-time music, influenced by the blues and to a small extent by hokum. Listening to their performances, one has to occasionally overlook small and unfortunate racist remarks that were part of the Southern white culture of the time.

They recorded for Columbia until the label released their oddball Laughin’ and Cryin’ Blues on their Race series as opposed to the significantly more white Old-Time series.
This might be the best debut album ever delivered by an American blues band, a bold, powerful, hard-edged, soulful essay in electric blues with a native Southern ambience. Some lingering elements of the psychedelic era then drawing to a close can be found in "Dreams," along with the template for the group's on-stage workouts with "Whipping Post," and a solid cover of Muddy Waters' "Trouble No More.
Statesboro Blues" is a Piedmont blues song written by Blind Willie McTell, who recorded it in 1928. The title refers to the town of Statesboro, Georgia. Taj Mahal recorded a popular blues rock adaptation of the song in 1968. His version inspired a recording by the Allman Brothers Band, which is ranked number nine on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time"
