Miles Davis Quintet (PRLP 185) is a 10 inch LP album by Miles Davis, released in 1954 by Prestige Records. The album title is not to be confused with either of Davis' later Great Quintets. The three tracks on this LP, and one other, were recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey, on April 3, 1954. This was the first session for Prestige Davis recorded at Gelder's home studio, as he would all his remaining sessions for the label.

Quintet/Sextet is notable for two compositions by Jackie McLean: "Dr. Jackle" and "Minor March" (it appears on his famous 1959 Blue Note date New Soil as "Minor Apprehension"). The former is a Charlie Parker-ish line featuring a masterful Milt Jackson symposium on the blues - Davis' typically lyric approach, a tart, spacious flight from McLean, and a soulful, dancing Ray Bryant. The latter is a mysterious minor figure with jabbing rhythm breaks and a joyous bridge that recalls "Tempus Fugit.

On such albums, Miles and company got the opportunity to exercise technical aptitude and learn the intricacies of typical jazz. This was essential to Miles’ modal explorations later on, as such explorations were built atop a rock-solid hard bop base. Cookin’ was the first album released in this series and as good a start as any. The album has the main components of a jazz record performed in formidable fashion. Excellent, blazing solos are continuously put forth on Airegin, and a romantic aura is exuded from My Funny Valentine, for example
